"Nature invites you to dive into her lap."
Thich Nhat Hahn
Each Mindful Step Heals Us
It was a good day to dive into nature's lap, the day promising
spring. Jacket weather, a pleasant day for hiking.
At the eastern-most point of the lake, the place where
the path crosses the creek, sits a bench memorializing my daughter.
Here I asked my friends to pause.
"Here is my pain. Here is my sorrow. Carry it with me."
And they spoke to me of their own losses, their spouses both
dying in the same year, and both of them named Frank.
We stopped at the herb garden where Sigrid had once asked
her daughter to bend down to inhale the scent of each,
and we admired the espaliered apple trees because
Sigrid's father had been an expert in their growth.
No need to dwell on sorrow. The relief we sought
was just beneath our feet.
