Gretchen's birthday was approaching. She wouldn't be opening gifts. Who, then, would I buy a gift for? I wanted the day to feel like a day for celebrating. I decided to buy a gift for what I still regarded as her classroom. She had taught three and four year-olds in a Christian preschool for several years; her friend still taught the class.
I purchased a set of classroom superhero capes so the students could continue the tradition of decorating a cape with their initials during the annual superhero week. I learned that Gretchen had made the capes herself - another bit of knowledge that made me marvel at her talents. I purchased 24 capes at Hobby Lobby.
Delivering the capes gave me another opportunity to reminisce with her co-teacher Michelle. She shared stories. We shed tears. I learned one of Gretchen's former students insisted that she drive by Gretchen's house on the day she wore her superhero cape, certain that "Miss Gretchen" would know she had stopped by.
