See the story of this item "Buy a gift for Michelle's classroom" at a previous blog post. I wrote the following poem as an assignment for a poetry class. The task was to write a poem about a photo or artwork. Michelle sent me this photo after last year's Superhero Week.
Look! She Flies!
This wee child stretches her arms
forward in flight, her superhero cape flung wide,
arranged across a deep blue fabric of sky,
cotton wisps of cloud above,
and a cardboard city below her --
her grin saying she believes the masquerade.
Her parents might frame this photograph
and hang it where she can view it often,
fortifying her belief that she can grow
to be a woman of wonder. Years ago,
my daughter Gretchen made the capes,
and her students decorated them
with emblems of super power.
Since her passing, Miss Michelle carries on
with capes I buy in Gretchen’s honor,
and I am sent photos of smiling children
in multicolored might. My daughter dressed
in caped costume, too, her Wonder Woman attire
clothing her in bravery. When she took her life,
was she picturing herself spread in splendor
against a royal sky, headed to heaven?
Look! She flies!
