"A smile says this is not the end of the world, even if it feels like it."
Thich Nhat Hanh
Try Smiling
When my husband was still drinking,
he demanded that I smile. I could not,
responding with a scowl instead,
allowing him to believe a bitter wife
was the reason for his troubles.
He is sober now and speaks to me
with gentle words. Past the need
of demanding affirmation, now he says
“I love it when you smile.”
May I remember the warmth I feel
in these words so that the next time I think
of what I’ve lost, I might try smiling.
